Could fascism happen in the US?
by Rick Casey, July 30, 2019
Fascism is basically defined as "authoritarian nationalism" (see wikipedia) in a country's national government.
This has often been accompanied by the merging of the state and big business, which reached its greatest expression in fascist Italy and Germany during World War II.
With rise of Trump, and the British version of this in its 2016 Brexit vote, as well as the rise of other nationalist movements in Europe, Brazil, there is a valid concern that a fascist form of government could become established in the US.
The evidence that the political tolerance for fascist-like measures in US is undeniable, with the spike in hate crimes and provocative tweets coming from the White House.
Despite all this, there is also an undeniable groundswell of popular resistance to this direction, as evidenced by the MeToo Movement, the Women's March, the March for Science, and the Climate Strike movement started in Sweden that has gone global.
My own observation is that without these truly grassroots movements and outbursts of democratic zeal is that, yes, a form of fascism could become the norm in our society, and the all too docile corporate media would just fall in line with it.
But the American people will be heard, and will not let that happen...
So it seems to boil down to this: will all the political influence and advertising bought by Dark Money be enough to overcome the democratic spirit of America?
Let's hope not. The midterm elections of 2018 had decisive impact on that direction; and the presidential election of 2020 a conclusive one. We need to keep fighting the good fight and make that happen!
